Poor Puppy

My poor little girl Abby spent the majority of Sunday in the puppy hospital. She injured some tonails on Saturday playing/fighting with the other dogs, and was having a hard time walking on Sunday morning. I was afraid that she might be getting an infection, and we were having to carry her outside to go potty because she was having such a hard time walking, so I took her in for an emergency appointment on Sunday morning.

She has been having some issues with her tonails getting infected and falling off, and she apparently has their weird condition called lupoid onychodystrophy. This is a lupus-like syndrome in dogs that affects their tonails and causes them to become brittle and break off, and when they grow back they look very deformed.

She has been wearing a cone for the last month to help keep her from licking her toes which can cause further infection. Yesterday the vet put her almost under and cut all of her tonails down to just the nubs so they wouldn't keep getting caught and breaking off. She was so doped up yesterday, and I felt really bad for her, but we did get a good laugh.

Abby and her "stoned" look

When we picked up her she looked completely stoned, her eyes were going in all different directions, and she was swaying. I felt so bad for her and just wanted to get her home to continue sleeping off the meds.

She is feeling a little better today, but we are keeping her on pain medication just until her damaged tonails start to heal. She is also on a concoction of meds for the lupoid onychodystrophy and we are hoping to start seeing some positive results in the next 6 - 8 weeks. Hopefully we can get this cone off of her soon. It's doesn't seem to bother her, but it really bothers me, and makes me feel really sorry for her.

In other news, I have some fun new recipes to share this week, and a recap of the Columbus Food Truck festival. Happy Monday!
